Metacarpal fracture

That’s right, the fifth bone in my hand under my pinky broke (Don’t ask how) It’s my right hand so I’m pretty much sitting around doing nothing (Hence no blog posts) I might post some pics of the x-ray soon. I went to the doctors with my hand the size of a small melon. I really thought it was nothing but then I heard the words “Yep, definitely a fracture”. I thought he would laugh and put some cream on it or something, really, I only went in hopes of getting a day more to prepare for the test I had the next day. Well anyway, the x-ray showed the top part of my bone had come off and sort of went off into another direction. So the guy is all “Since this is fresh, you’ve got TWO options.” as I looked at my mum who seemed distracted with something else, I realized this was to be my decision.

Apparently I could either undergo a rather costly operation involving screws and a metal plate getting stuck to my bone. Or I could have him yank on my bone and put it back in place there and then.. Which had two sub-options, one being to use the crappy local anaesthetic injection he had at hand or call an anaesthesiologist and get him to do a better job at making it not hurt.

I decided to go with b(a) and do it there and then, before my courage streak went away. He quickly took me into another room and stuck a needle in my hand. This was no small needle going into my hand a tiny bit. It went right into my hand leaving less then 1cm on the outside, making him reach down under my hand to see if it was near the other side. I really thought it was going right through, but then he jogged it a little bit and told me to hold still… it hit the first nerve. It made me jump a bit, with an electric shock sensation in my arm. He then pulled out a little bit and pointed it into another direction, another shock! He then pulled it out and put it into the side of my hand, one final small shock and he put it away. It took quite a while to do this and it was slightly painful, but I knew the worst was yet to come. After some 5 minutes of talking, he asks “Do you feel your hand?” I move it around a bit, Yes I did feel it. We carried on talking, about 8 minutes later he goes “All right then” as he adjusts his gloves. I quickly check my hand, sure it felt a bit numb, but not nearly as much as I hoped. It was as if I had slept on it for 10 minutes, I could feel it but it was tingly.

Next thing I know, he’s digging his hand deep into my palm. “This isn’t so bad” I think to myself. As if to prove me wrong, he instantly grabs my little finger and gives it a yank hard enough to keep me up at night for the next couple of days. After about 20 minutes of pulling, tugging, yanking and “repositioning”, he concludes it’s all he can do and starts to apply the plaster material, commonly known as cast. After that, I went home to receive the traditional “I’ve been there before, but mine was worse” by my dad and some scribbles from a friend.

In conclusion, my fear of fractures was proven to be stupid, as it didn’t hurt nearly as much as I expected it to when done, yet the aftermath of it was the part that hurt most.

Fractured 5th metacarpal bone

My PC was also screwed up (Yeah great timing). Windows kinda fucked its self up the anus (as it always does) so I reinstalled. I then discovered my PSU fan wasn’t working, so I cleaned and oiled it. Everything seems to be fine now.

Also, adult educational school just finished so I can say bye to it forever (Uni here I come). Need to pass a few tests to get into the “UPB” uni, which is apparently the best one over here at the moment (pretty expensive though). Wish me luck!

ouch! that must have hurt.

I have broken the bone in my left finger 3+ times and it’s really weak, but just a small break not as bad as yours!

hope it gets better. <3

@zzap:
Yep, as I said it hurt more to get it fixed than to get it done, but I’m feeling way better other than the annoying, stinky, old cast.
I think I’m getting a new one today.
